Erdogan to US: Turkey or Gulen?

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on the United States on Wednesday to extradite US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen. He warns that Washington needs to make a choice between Turkey or the cleric.

"Sooner or later, the United States will make a choice. Either Turkey or Fetullah's terrorist organization. They will either choose the putschist terrorist or Turkey, the democratic country. They need to make a choice. We sent eighty-five boxes of files," Erdogan said.

Erdogan made the comments while addressing thousands of people gathered outside the presidential palace in Ankara. He has accused Gulen of orchestrating the coup attempt last month, despite the 75-year-old cleric denials. The President launched nation-wide purges after the failed coup.

Over 60,000 people, including many in the military and police, have since been detained, suspended or placed under investigation. Erdogan also warned of threats from the Kurdistan Workers' Party and the Islamic State in Wednesday's speech. He referred to bomb attacks and cross-border fire that killed 13 in southeast Turkey earlier in the day.
